Pool Problems

Eye/Skin Irritation
  1. Is normally caused by a pH below 7.
  2. If pH below 7. You should adjust with pH Plus immediately.
  3. If the pH is ok then test for chloramines (do you know how to test for chloramines?)
If yes go to next step. If not go to how to test for chloramines.
  4. If you have chloramines you need to Shock pool using Shock Quick, or All-In-One Chlorinating Granules.

Eye/Skin Irritation & Chlorine Odor
  1. You need to test for chloramines, (do you know how to test for chloramines?)
If yes go to next step. If no go to how to test for chloramines.
  2. If you have chloramines you need to Shock pool using Shock Quick, or All-In-One Chlorinating Granules.
**(always remember to test for low pH before shocking.)

Blue/Green Water
  1. Dose your water look clear except for the color?
  2. If YES go to next step. If NO go to Dull Green Water
  3. Is normally caused by a pH below 7. you should test and adjust with pH PLUS immediately.
  4. Use ULTRA CLARIFIER to drop out small particles the filter will not catch and METAL & CALCIUM ELIMINATOR to avoid stains.

Cloudy Water
  • There are a few things that can cause this:
    1. Check filter system for malfunction such as
      1. Filter is plugged up and needs chemical cleaning.
      2. Filter has a hole in it which permits fine particles to pass through it.
      3. Pump is defective.
      4. Blockage exists in filtration system and/or lines.
      5. Insufficient filter running time.
      6. Air trapped or low water level preventing flow.
    2. Test total alkalinity & pH (it may be too high).
    3. Check for low chlorine level.
    4. Are you having trouble maintaining chlorine reading? (if yes go to algae)
    5. Is algae starting to grow? (if yes go to algae)
  • After you fix the cause you should Shock pool using Shock Quick, or All-In-One Chlorinating Granules.
  • Use Ultra Clarifier to drop out small particles the filter will not catch and Metal & Calcium Elminator to avoid stains.

Scale & Stains
  • Ultra Clarifier will aid in removing particles.
  • However the cause must be determined to help the cleaning process
and prevent it from happening again.
  • Test for high total alkalinity & high pH. Adjust using pH Minus.
  • Another cause may be high hardness levels.
  • To lower hardness levels you need to drain at least 1/2 the water from the pool and refill.
  • For prevention use Metal & Calcium Elminator or Stain & Scale Inhibitor.

Green Algae or Dull Green Water
  • Is normally caused by low chlorine level.
  • Test and adjust pH to 7.4
  • Shock in the evening using Shock Quick, or All-In-One Chlorinating Granulesat two or three times the normal shock treatment.
  • Treat pool with Mustard Algaecide.
  • 24 hours after the shock and Mustard Algaecide treatment start using any of the following Algaecide 60% Concentrated, Green Algaecide, Phosphate Remover, or Algaecide & Clarifier as part of your normal maintenance to help prevent further problems. Recommend using Ultra Clarifier to help filter out dead algae.

Brown, Mustard or Yellow Algae
  • Test and adjust pH to 7.4
  • Super chlorinate with Shock Quick, or All-In-One Chlorinating Granules at two or three times the normal shock treatment.
  • Treat pool with Mustard Algaecide at two (2) times the normal dosage.
  • 24 hours after the shock and Mustard Algaecide treatment start using any of the following Algaecide 60% Concentrated, Green Algaecide, Phosphate Remover, or Algaecide & Clarifier as part of your normal maintenance to help prevent further problems. Recommend using Metal & Calcium Eliminator to avoid stains.

Black Algae
  • Test and adjust pH to 7.4
  • Super chlorinate with Shock Quick, or All-In-One Chlorinating Granules at two or three times the normal shock treatment.
  • Scrub black spots with wire Algae brush
  • Place Black Algaecide directly over spots.
  • 24 hours after the shock treatment start using any of the following Algaecide 60% Concentrated, Green Algaecide, Phosphate Remover, or Algaecide & Clarifier as part of your normal maintenance to help prevent further problems. Recommend using Metal & Calcium Eliminator to avoid stains.

Red or Pink Algae
Pink or Red algae are one of the more difficult algaes to get rid of it may take several treatments to get rid of.
  1. Test and adjust pH to 7.4
  2. Super chlorinate with Shock Quick, or All-In-One Chlorinating Granules.
  3. Treat pool with Mustard Algaecide at three (3) times the normal dosage
  4. 24 hours after the shock and Mustard Algaecide treatment start using any of the following Algaecide 60% Concentrated, Green Algaecide, Phosphate Remover, or Algaecide & Clarifier as part of your normal maintenance to help prevent further problems. Recommend using Metal & Calcium Eliminator to avoid stains.

Slippery Pool Surfaces
  • Test and adjust pH to 7.4
  • Is beginning of algae growth. Shock using Shock Quick, or All-In-One Chlorinating Granules.
  • 24 hours after the shock and Algy Cop treatment start using any of the followingAlgaecide 60% Concentrated, Green Algaecide, Phosphate Remover, or Algaecide & Clarifier as part of your normal maintenance to help prevent further problems.

Brown/Orange Water (Iron)
  • Test and adjust pH to 7.4
  • Add Ultra Clarifier then Metal and Calcium Eliminator

Testing for chloramines with 5-Way Test Kit

Fill SMALL CELL to UPPER LINE with water sample.

  • Add 5 DROPS of O.T.O. CHLORINE INDICATOR NO. 1, cap, and QUICKLY invert several times.
  • At TEN SECONDS match the sample color to the CHLORINE STANDARDS. This is the FREE CHLORINE.
  • Set sample aside and match color again at 2 MINUTES. This is the TOTAL CHLORINE.
  • If TOTAL CHLORINE is higher than FREE CHLORINE you have chloramines.
Subtract the FREE CHLORINE from the TOTAL CHLORINE to determine the amount CHLORAMINES
(TOTAL CHLORINE - FREE CHLORINE = CHLORAMINES).

Testing for chloramines with 3-Way Test Kit
  1. Fill CELL to UPPER LINE with water sample.
  2. Add 5 DROPS of O.T.O. CHLORINE INDICATOR NO. 1, cap, and QUICKLY invert several times.
  3. At TEN SECONDS match the sample color to the CHLORINE STANDARDS. This is the FREE CHLORINE.
  4. Set sample aside and match color again at 2 MINUTES. This is the TOTAL CHLORINE.
  5. If TOTAL CHLORINE is higher than FREE CHLORINE you have chloramines.
  6. Subtract the FREE CHLORINE from the TOTAL CHLORINE to determine the amount CHLORAMINES
(TOTAL CHLORINE - FREE CHLORINE = CHLORAMINES)

Testing for chloramines with Test Strips
  1. This can only be done with test strips that have both total chlorine and free chlorine.
  2. Follow the instructions for the test strips.
  3. If TOTAL CHLORINE is higher than FREE CHLORINE you have chloramines.
  4. Subtract the FREE CHLORINE from the TOTAL CHLORINE to determine the amount CHLORAMINES
(TOTAL CHLORINE - FREE CHLORINE = CHLORAMINES).
