Next How To Guide: How To 5 Way Test (pool and spa)

Recommended ranges

  • pH level in water: 7.2 to 7.6 for pools and spas
  • Free chlorine level in water: 1.0 to 1.5 parts per million (ppm) for pools, 1 to 3 ppm for spas
  • Bromine level in water: 2.2 to 3.4 ppm for pools, 2.2 to 6.8 ppm for spas

Submerge the inverted block to elbow length and turn upright to fill. Pour out excess water to the fill line. For pH testing: Add 5 drops of Phenol Red. No. 2 solution to pH cell, cap and invert several times. Allow color to stabilize (about 2 minutes) and compare with color standards for pH reading. Chlorine bromine testing: Add 5 drops of OTO Chlorine/Bromine Indicator No. 1 solution to the chlorine cell, cap and invert several times. Compare with color standards for free chlorine at 10 seconds. At 2 minutes, compare with color standards for total chlorine or bromine. If the total chlorine exceeds free chlorine by 1 ppm, it indicates the presence of chloramines and you will need to shock the water to 5ppm for every 1ppm of chloramines. Note: Read pH only when bromine or chlorine is in the proper range; if bromine is above recommended range, a false high pH reading can occur. IMPORTANT NOTE: Kem-Tek test kits and reagents are specifically designed to be used together; do not mix different testing solutions or different kits.
